Medical Therapeutics and Spiritual Healing

In the framework of the cycle of seminars “Freedom released: Spiritual implications in processes of help and healing” organized by the Transpersonal Humanist Institute of Chile, on Saturday, November 16, Dr. Jacques Mabit will give a master class focused on the relationship between Shamanism and Christianity.

This seminar seeks to generate a dialogue between shamanism, Christianity and the knowledge provided by modern psychology and medical sciences around the phenomenon of infestations or possessions.

All the great spiritual traditions share the idea that a person (or place) can be the victim of an infestation or demonic possession, when an evil spirit enters and takes possession of their body and makes them speak and behave, not as they would like, but as such spirit wants. According to Orthodox psychology, it is considered a dissociative disorder of hysteria and is sometimes called a "mania demon." According to psychiatry it is often considered as a schizophrenia (hearing voices or seeing people), or multiple personality disorder, etc.

The oldest references of demonic possessions date back to the Sumerians, who believed that all diseases of the body and of the mind were caused by "spirits or demons" called gid-dim. The priest who practiced the rituals of liberation was called "ashipu", as opposed to the "asu", doctors who applied bandages. A variety of cuneiform writing tablets have been found that include prayers to certain gods asking for protection against demons, and others asking the gods to expel the demons that invaded their bodies.

In the Amerindian cultures of the native peoples the intrusion of "evil spirits" generating plagues, ruins, and diseases in people was also known. The medical healers performed fasting, taking of purgative and psychoactive plants to exorcise evil spirits and free from harm, evil or disease. In these cultures, "diseases" were attributed to the action of a "bad spirit" on the patient's body.

In Christian literature we can find hierarchies, order and coherence in the actions of demons, and also ways, methods, techniques and prayers to free themselves from them.
