Thank you very much for your support!

Dear friends, we would like to wholeheartedly thank all those who have made a donation to Takiwasi during the Christmas season, allowing us to raise an essential fund that is helping us improve our financial situation and drastically reduce our debts. About fifty contributors allowed us to reach 20% of the goal. Our donation campaign remains open at the beginning of this new year to complete this fund and we hope that more people will be joining to support us during this month of January as well.

In the button below you will find all the available options to make the donation, including online payment by credit or debit card, which for many may be the easiest and most immediate option. For our European friends who wish, there is also the option of donating to a bank account in euros in France (see details). All donors will receive a donation certificate that can be used with the tax authorities to request a tax reduction. If you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to write to us at administracion@takiwasi.com.

Every donation, even if small, is important. Thank you very much in advance.

The armor worn by veterans: A journey of strength, struggle, and healing

We share a new article that focuses on the psychological and emotional journey of military veterans, exploring how their military training creates a tough, almost impenetrable armor that they must later shed to heal.

For many military veterans, the scars of war are not just those seen on the outside, but those buried deep within. As soldiers, they are trained to endure extreme conditions, both physical and emotional. In this rigorous environment, vulnerability is not seen as an option. Instead, they are taught to "suck it up," to push through pain, fear, and trauma. Over time, this mindset builds a psychological and emotional armor, one that serves to protect them in combat but can prove to be a heavy burden once they leave the battlefield.

Starting in 2025, Takiwasi will be hosting a new therapeutic program exclusively designed for Veterans and First Responders with 03 retreats that will take place in June, July and August. The application process is now open and available through our website to participants speaking English, French and Spanish. Help us share this information with Veterans and First Responders in your family or social circle who may be interested in joining us for a transformative journey.

Opening of the Taki Tambo lodge

Dear friends, after more than 2 years of preparation and construction, we are pleased to announce the opening of Taki Tambo Lodge, a hotel located on the Takiwasi grounds. This project has been in our plans for many years, and here it is finally ready: we now have an adequate accommodation proposal adapted to our therapeutic activities.

This project aims to contribute to financing the operation of the Takiwasi Center, thanks to the loan of four people close to the interests of the Center. Since the COVID19 crisis, Takiwasi's finances have been in difficulty, hence our numerous calls for donations, but this initiative is precisely trying to resolve these drawbacks, by betting on the success of this project in the medium term.

New research article on the icaros

New paper by Maya Sherwin, MA in Music Therapy, in collaboration with our research team published in Journal of Psychedelic Studies.

This study on the participant experiences of icaros during ayahuasca ceremonies at Takiwasi, offers a medical ethnomusicological contribution to the phenomenological mapping of musico-healing experiences of Amazonian curative songs under the altered state of consciousness produced by ayahuasca.

Psychosis and Ayahuasca

Our research team's new talk, titled: “Psychosis and Ayahuasca” will be broadcast in Spanish through our Facebook Live on Thursday, January 23 at 11:00 am (Peru time).

In this conversation we will explore the first results of the doctoral thesis work in medical anthropology by Annalisa Valeri, an Italian psychotherapist, on the so-called psychotic experiences as narrated by Takiwasi patients who have experienced them and how they were addressed and treated by the healers and psychologists of the center. Our attention will focus mainly on the encounters between the human and the non-human, understanding by "non-human" not only plants and animals, but also beings of nature and spiritual entities. We will also address the concept of the body, which differs from the biological and individual idea of Western culture, to delve deeper into the notion of different bodies present in Takiwasi and also in the cosmovision of indigenous communities. Finally, we will discuss the possible clinical implications derived from the integration of alternative conceptions of the body into therapeutic practice.

The Healing Potential of Icaros During Ayahuasca Ceremonies

We share the video of the last talk by our research team, entitled: “The Healing Potential of Icaros During Ayahuasca Ceremonies”.

The research conducted by Owain Graham, PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Riverside, has focused on analyzing the therapeutic importance of the icaros, recording how these chants used during Ayahuasca ceremonies provoke healing experiences by modulating the patients’ emotions and the modified state of consciousness induced by the brew. It has been possible to observe how the icaros help patients feel safe while guiding them through difficult memories and emotions, and facilitate healing and learning experiences about their substance use problems. Something interesting that emerged during the research is that the icaros accompany the patients as echoes also after the Ayahuasca ceremony, for example, during the retreats-diets and even after finishing the treatment, keeping the person connected to the process of taking plants.

Celebrating the achievements of indigenous students supported by Takiwasi and Fondation Vermont

Last December we celebrated the graduation of Mayra, Mardin and Shano. They are three young Awajún from the remote community of Yutupis, in the Peruvian Amazon, who have spent the last five years of their lives in Lima, to study Education at the Schiller-Goethe Pedagogical Institute and thus become teachers.

This wonderful success has been achieved thanks to the commitment and dedication of the students, and thanks to the full scholarships provided by the Vermont Foundation, a small family foundation based in France that, since 2019, has been financing, in coordination with Takiwasi, the higher education of young Awajún and Wampis indigenous people from the Rio Santiago district, Amazonas region of Peru.

Takiwasi Center Online Courses

We want to invite you to enroll in our online courses:

- Introducción al modelo terapéutico Takiwasi: 11 pre-registered classes taught in Spanish by the therapeutic team of the Takiwasi Center. Topics such as Traditional Amazonian Medicine are addressed, including the presentation of specific techniques such as plant baths and purges, and the application of Western psychological approaches in the treatment of addictions, such as existential psychotherapies and the analysis of trans-generational inheritances.

- Coherencias entre la iniciación cristiana y la iniciación amazónica: taught in Spanish by Dr. Jacques Mabit, course based on 5 pre-registered videos. The experience of the Takiwasi Center shows us that there are numerous and surprising points of coherence and convergence between the Christian faith and Amazonian shamanism (when correctly understood and practiced). This course attempts to highlight the relevance of bringing these two paths of knowledge closer together and articulating them appropriately in favor of opening new paths for the healing of the body, mind and spirit.
