Aromatherapy in the treatment of addiction
Historically, Western medicine and psychotherapy have overlooked the potential of using the sense of smell for therapeutic purposes. However, in other medical traditions, such as that of the Peruvian Amazon, specific therapeutic interventions based on the use of aromatic plants are commonly carried out in conjunction with other healing modalities that include plant baths and rituals with perfumes. Traditional healers specialized in such healing sessions are known locally as “perfumeros”. This research describes how traditional Amazonian aromatherapy is used in the context of the Takiwasi Center.
