Healing Heroes: A Unique Retreat for Veterans & First Responders
Veterans and First Responders face unique challenges, from PTSD and grief to insomnia and traumatic brain injury, often leading to family tensions, social isolation, and even suicidal tendencies. At Takiwasi, we understand these struggles and offer a proven model for physical, mental and spiritual healing.
With over 32 years of experience, Takiwasi is the world’s leader in combining psychotherapy with ancestral medicinal plants. Our approach has been studied by over 80 international research projects in collaboration with top universities, including Arizona State University, UC Riverside, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Recognized by the Ministry of Health of Peru, Takiwasi is now offering dedicated retreats for Veterans and First Responders, in English, Spanish and French. These transformative programs address mental health, trauma, and substance abuse using our effective, low-cost therapeutic protocol with proven results.
Set in the serene Peruvian jungle near Tarapoto, our center offers modern facilities and a protected 108-acre botanical reserve. Starting in 2025, we will host three exclusive retreats each year, with the first sessions in June, July, and August.
Help us share this information with Veterans and First Responders in your family or social circle who may be interested in joining us for a transformative journey.

Plants, charisms, human brain, angels and Holy Spirit
Father Edouard-Marie Gallez, a theologian and specialist in the history of religious phenomena, after several stays in Takiwasi, offers us in a few pages pages a summarized essay on “Plants, charismas, the human brain, angels and the Holy Spirit”, which he himself describes as very daring... But this humble audacity allows us to synthetically visualize the bridges that can be established between faith, spirituality and plants, without betraying any of these spaces.

Subscribe to our YouTube channel
We invite you to subscribe to our YouTube channel where you will find a wide collection of documentaries, conferences, interviews, testimonies and reports on the use of Amazonian medicinal plants. The videos are available in Spanish, French and English.
Among the various videos you can find a conversation about plant spirits and ikaros with Edgardo Tuanama, healer at the Takiwasi Center. In the Peruvian Amazon, a certain group of medicinal plants known as master plants are considered to have the power to teach and heal the individual through their spirit, which is responsible for transmitting to the healer the ikaros or sacred songs that are used to “call” the spirit of the plant and receive its help.

Sustainable use of Cat's Claw in indigenous communities
The new talk by our research team, entitled: “Sustainable use of Cat's Claw in indigenous communities” will be broadcast through our Facebook Live on Tuesday, November 26 at 11:00 am (Peru time).
This conversation will present the research work carried out by Anne Jahnkow for her graduation thesis in Forest Ecosystem Management at the University of Eberswalde for Sustainable Development, Germany. Anne's research has examined sustainable community forest management of medicinal plants, focusing specifically on the wild collection of Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) in the Chirik Sacha native community in San Martín, Peru. The research has sought to identify the factors that hinder the successful management of Cat's Claw, suggest improvements for sustainable extraction and commercialization, and explore the potential of a community-managed cultivation system.

Cultural roots and traditional uses of diet plants used at the Takiwasi Center
We share the video of the research talk from last October, entitled: “Cultural roots and traditional uses of diet plants used at the Takiwasi Center.”
With the support of the Takiwasi Center research team, anthropologist Tommaso Dondoli has developed this research project focused on 3 main objectives: to carry out the botanical identification of 10 specific plants used in the ritual process of the diet at the Takiwasi Center; to identify the historical chronology of the implementation of each plant in the dietary process at Takiwasi, investigating the local origin of the remedies, the history of the indigenous or mestizo teachers who introduced their use and possible adaptations over time; to analyze the production and supply chain of the master plants and the associated biotrade practices.

Ikaros Catalogue
We share the complete catalogue of our ikaros, which includes the new production made to celebrate the 30 years of work in Takiwasi of our director Jaime Torres.
The ikaros are essential elements of Traditional Amazonian Medicine and constitute a source of cultural resistance by preserving both linguistic elements and knowledge related to Amazonian world-view and medicinal resources. They are the essential means of transmitting wisdom and healing practices. This concept led us to call our center "Takiwasi" that in Quechua means "the house that sings" or "the house of song", to honor this tradition.
